TONY NOBLE ON March 14<sup>th<\/sup>, 2010<\/span><\/strong><strong><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: 14pt;\"><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\" align=\"center\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Luke 15: 11-32 \u201cYour brother was dead and is alive.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He was lost and is found.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\" align=\"center\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Sometimes, the season of Lent proves to be very difficult.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Here we are in the middle of the season, and perhaps. like me, you\u2019ve already slipped in your Lenten rule.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Perhaps, you made some resolutions about extra worship, or prayer, or reading, or fasting.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And then hurdles appeared, and caused you to stumble.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We ought not to be surprised at this.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Satan does not like us to make spiritual progress, nor to focus more on Christ in our lives.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>For Satan is <strong>the<\/strong> tempter.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">So today, with its note of festivity and refreshment, is more than just light relief in Lent. It is an opportunity to start again &#8211; to reassess our spiritual journey, and renew our Lenten pilgrimage.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Today\u2019s Gospel is all about starting again and renewal.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The prodigal son squandered his father\u2019s gifts. But then he was able to start life again because of his father&#8217;s love and forgiveness.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Of course that father is an image of our Heavenly Father. But he is also an image of Jesus, who forgave those who crucified Him with that most easiest of excuses \u2013 that they did not know what they were doing. &#8220;<em>Father forgive them, for they know not what they do<\/em>&#8220;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>In the parable, not only did the prodigal son experience renewal, but so did the father.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He was renewed by his son\u2019s return.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The tears he shed were not those shed by the waters of Babylon, but tears of his own unconditional love.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Loving is hard, but forgiving is much more difficult &#8211; and both are divine.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And when we do so, we are blessed, renewed, and sanctified.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Did the older brother know this renewing power of love and forgiveness?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We are not told.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We would hope so. But all we are left with is a brother who has succumbed to the evil one \u2013 that great tempter who is the father of lies.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This parable presents to us an image of temptation, and the choice between good and evil.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>One results in love and rejoicing; the other in jealousy and bitterness.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">So today would be a good day to revisit the temptations that our Lord faced at the hands of Satan in the wilderness.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>For those three temptations are common to us all.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Jesus\u2019 forty days of prayer and fasting in the wilderness are our pattern for the season of Lent.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>So we ought not to be surprised that during Lent, we may have slipped and faced temptation like Jesus.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The forty days of Lent are also an image of our own life and its pilgrimage &#8211; with all its\u2019 snares of the enemy. The enemy who is the evil one.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We confront evil in the normal course of life, year in and year out.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Lent reminds us that the temptations we face are more subtle and attractive than evil &#8211; to put ourselves ahead of others, for instance. Or to make our needs and desires an idol to be worshiped. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And so to Jesus\u2019 temptations. He fasted, and He was both hungry and thirsty.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<em>Turn these stones into bread<\/em>,\u201d said Satan.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I suppose Jesus could have &#8211; if He wanted to &#8211; turn those stones into bread.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It would have been to please himself, of course. Not to have shown the glory of God, like when He turned the water to wine at the wedding in Cana. That was to glorify God. To change the stones into bread would have just satisfied His immediate need.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Turning stones into bread may not seem to be a temptation that we face &#8211; but all of us have gifts from God, and sometimes we waste them.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or we use those gifts to glorify ourselves,<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>or to please others.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Take the gift of speech for instance \u2013 how easy it can be used as a vehicle of destruction or self justification, rather than communicating truth and expressing the love of God &#8211; like the prodigal son\u2019s father did.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Do we squander the Father\u2019s gifts like the prodigal son?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">What of the second temptation &#8211; the temptation for Jesus to throw himself down from the pinnacle of the temple, way down into the brook of Kedron?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This was a test for Jesus of His divinity &#8211; to show He could do these miraculous things.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The tempter whispered, \u201cYou have nothing to fear.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Angels will swoop down and catch You.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We could go to the Coronado Bridge and jump off. It is unlikely &#8211; but there are times when we do put God to the test.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Like making demands in our prayers. Putting God in a balancing act, and waiting to see if He responds in our favor.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I guess we\u2019ve all done that &#8211; thinking it was the sort of prayer Jesus urged upon us.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Finally, the temptation of power and control.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Mostly, this does not come our way, but is left to those in high places.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>But Satan whispers to Jesus, \u201cworship worldly success, not the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Use Your divine powers to persuade the crowd to follow You.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>There is only one condition.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Bow down and worship me.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Serve evil and not the good.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In its simplicity, the parable of the prodigal son is the antidote for all those temptations which are mirrored by Jesus. and more.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Chiefly, the parable of the prodigal son is the story of God\u2019s great love for all His creatures. Even we humans who are prone to sin. Especially, we humans who are prone to sin. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">It is the story of Lent.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Like Lent, this story climaxes with resurrection.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The prodigal son was dead, and he came back to life.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He was lost, and he was found.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LOVING IS HARD, FORGIVING IS MORE DIFFICULT SERMON PREACHED BY FR.
