TONY NOBLE ON September 19<sup>th<\/sup>, 2010<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Luke 16:30 \u201cNo servant can serve two masters.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>You cannot serve God and mammon.<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN;\" lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\" align=\"center\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This past week, in Chicago, there was an event that had people yelling and screaming in great excitement.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It had repercussions all over the world, with a similar response in, of all places, Australia.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>What happened on Monday was that Oprah Winfrey announced on her TV show that she was going to Australia, to film one of her shows.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not only was she going to Australia &#8211; but she was taking her audience of 300 with her.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They would all be flown in a Qantas jet by non-other than John Travolta.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Yes, Oprah\u2019s show is going to be filmed live from the Sydney Opera House. This has caused the Australian Tourist Bureau to rename the Opera House, <em>The Oprah House<\/em>!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>After the show Oprah and her 300 fans are going to the Great Barrier Reef for sight seeing.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Then to finish up what is going to be an exciting trip, they are going to my hometown, Melbourne &#8211; to go shopping, of course!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>So you can imagine all the excitement amongst all those Chicago housewives last Monday when this was announced.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Who wouldn\u2019t want a free trip to Australia?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">To get something for nothing is always exciting.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Who among us hasn\u2019t welcomed the idea of something free? Isn\u2019t that why people go to Las Vegas regularly, buy lottery tickets, and collect two-for-one vouchers from all those publications we get in our letter boxes?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I remember earlier this year, standing in line at Ralph\u2019 supermarket, and watching a man purchase 24 jars of laundry detergent.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Each was purchased with a $1.00 discount coupon.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Who among us has not enjoyed a bargain or a discount?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>My thing is collecting frequent flyer miles, so that I can get those free upgrades to Australia. But I\u2019m certainly not going on that Oprah Winfrey flight!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Getting something for nothing leads naturally, of course, to today\u2019s gospel &#8211; the parable of the dishonest steward.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He wanted something for nothing, and so he pinched from his employer.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The steward took some money on the side and tossed it around as though it belonged to him &#8211; when, in fact, it didn\u2019t.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>These days, we call that white collar crime. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The steward was a white collar criminal.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He was also a clever man. To gain his master\u2019s confidence and trust back, as well as keep his job, he gave others something for nothing.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He discounted the debts of those under him.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>How clever is that?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Jesus concludes the parable by saying: \u201c<em>The sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light<\/em>.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now we who follow Jesus are children of the light. Perhaps we are a little more innocent, naive, or honest than those Jesus calls \u2018sons of this world.\u2019<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I know what Jesus is talking about, and I think you do too.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I usually take people as I find them.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I try and see in them an image of Christ &#8211; I hope we all try and do that.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes when you take people at face value, you get deceived.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s the risk we, as Christians take, when we see Christ in the other person.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Indeed, we follow our Lord\u2019s teaching, \u201c<em>He who is faithful in a very little, is faithful in much<\/em>.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In our relationships with people, we are bound to take them as we find them.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>By being faithful in relationships, we will be faithful in larger and bigger things. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>We are compelled by Our Lord to be faithful &#8211; even if leaves us open to being tricked, or used, or even attacked.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In the middle of this gospel reading, Jesus says something quite strange. Following the parable, He says: \u201c<em>Make friends for yourselves by means of<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>unrighteous mammon<\/em>.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>What does he mean?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>That we should use money to gain friends?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It does seem strange, and the opposite of what he is teaching us.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This saying does have to be taken in the context of Luke 16:13, \u201c<em>You cannot serve God and mammon<\/em>.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In other words, Jesus is saying &#8211; don\u2019t be a slave of money; let it be useful to you; but don\u2019t let it control you.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">There is a fine line between using money and being controlled by money.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>When we think of what Our Lord has said, we think of very rich millionaires, those who own great properties, or those who live expensive lifestyles. But this lesson can also apply to panhandlers and street people.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They always ask us for money, don\u2019t they?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In a reverse way, money seems to control their lives too.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They exist purely to get money.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s the same as the millionaires. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Money is important for Christians, of course.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is important for a church like All Saints\u2019.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We use it for God\u2019s work.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>So its\u2019 importance is right and proper.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Like most Churches, October is Stewardship month.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We will be asked to consider our giving to All Saints\u2019 and to make a pledge.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We could not budget without your pledges and your commitment.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Vestry is charged with seeing this financial responsibility and the administration of it.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is necessary that we are good stewards of what has been given to us.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>All of us, whether we are millionaires or street people, are called to be stewards of money, and not slaves of money.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">There is a very close relationship between money and power &#8211; for one begets the other.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Politicians and world leaders are called to be stewards of power, and not slaves of power &#8211; but many easily fall for that trap.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Although having lots of money can be an exciting thing, having power is the most supreme excitement of all.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In a church, a stewardship campaign is more than about money, budgets, and meeting our expenses.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Traditionally, in the Episcopal Church we say it\u2019s about time, talents, and treasure.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>That means that we give back to God in thankfulness for his blessings to us not only our money, but with our time and our talents.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I think a better way of describing<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>time, talent, and a treasure is: our presence, our labor, and our material worth.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">These three words -: presence, labor, and material worth &#8211; convey what we are worth as individuals, and are a representation of who we are.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Who we are is surely what we are giving back to God as stewards.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;
