All things were made through him\u2026\u2026\u2026And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us<\/em>.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The baby Jesus, whom we come to worship this morning, is the Word of God made flesh. He is the incarnate Son of God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The readings at Mass on Christmas Day focus on this, and draw our hearts to this theological mystery. But our minds are really elsewhere.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We are more inclined to gaze at the people who are part of the scene:<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and the wise men.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Although the mystery of the incarnation is the focus of this morning\u2019s Mass, we cannot look at the simple scene in Bethlehem without stopping and pondering. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">There are some who are neglected in this scene.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Perhaps they are merely scene as decoration or background music. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>I refer, of course, to the angels.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, they are featured in every Christmas Creche, on Christmas cards, and in many Christmas carols and hymns.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We find that the Christmas angels are different from other angels in the scriptures.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They just come for this great day.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The angels we usually find in scripture bring announcements from God. The one\u2019s that appear to be important have names like Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. The names of the Christmas angels are not given &#8211; they are simply called a great host.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They did not come to fight, or to bring about an event.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They don\u2019t actually come to <em>do<\/em> anything.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They come to worship.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The Christmas angels simply came to worship Christ.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>That, of course, is what they do eternally in heaven.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>What we see them doing on Christmas day is what they do forever.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In their appearing at Bethlehem, there is one other purpose.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their purpose was to bring light.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Luke 2 records: \u201c<em>Lo the angle of the Lord came upon them, and lo the glory of the Lord shown round about them<\/em>.\u201d <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>The theme of light is associated with the Christmas angels. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>These angels lend light and luster to the scene.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The mystery they worship is obscure\u2026\u2026\u2026their presence literally illuminates it. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Along with singing and praise, light is one of the themes flowing throughout scripture.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>This first chapter of Hebrews speaks at length about the angels bearing witness by shining light on the situation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They do not reveal the mystery and its meaning &#8211; but they draw attention to it.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They do not explain it &#8211; but they worship it by their presence, by their singing and by their worship. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I believe that is the simplest definition of our vocation as Christians: our presence and our worship.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Either way, we live the life of Christ\u2019s disciples just like the angels. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Of course, the most obvious thing about the Christmas angels is that they sing.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201c<em>Glory be to God on high<\/em>, <em>and on earth, goodwill and peace towards men.<\/em>\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Why do they sing?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is because they cannot help it. They are watching the incarnation, the birth of God as a man.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Of course they are going to sing!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We would have sung if we were there.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">There was music at the heart of creation, at the dawn of this world.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>There is music always at the heart of worship. And there is music at the heart of God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>So they sing, \u201c<em>Glory.<\/em>\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the Christmas angels, by their singing, give us a vision of peace.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<em>Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace and goodwill towards men<\/em>.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The angels sing of peace.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thus they reveal the purpose of the birth of the Prince of Peace.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">From the moment of Jesus\u2019 birth the angels sing of peace, because that was to be his vocation and ministry.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>His birth is linked particularly to peace.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The angels knew that then and they know it now.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">So on this Christmas day, as we come to worship with the angels &#8211; singing indeed their song &#8211; we must make their song of peace our own Christmas message.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><em><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ANGELS SINGING SERMON PREACHED BY FR.
