TONY NOBLE ON December 26<sup>th<\/sup> 2010<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none; mso-layout-grid-align: none; tab-stops: 153.75pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">St. John<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"> 1:12 \u201c<em>To all who received him and believed in his name he gave<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>power to become children of God.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201c<em>Power to become children of God<\/em>.\u201d If we were looking for an example of those who illustrate this particular verse we would have to look no further than the shepherds of Bethlehem.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>We don\u2019t really think deeply about them.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s possible that they were people just like us.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They certainly had names, and probably families.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, of all the characters in the Christmas story, it is surely the shepherds who received Jesus and believed in his name as St. John says.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Because they received him and believed on his name, and because they were just ordinary men, they certainly became children of God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\">Ordinary men. It is the simplicity of the shepherds that first gets our attention.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They were simple country folk, we might say, uncomplicated. They were connected by their work &#8211; and their very lives &#8211; to the earth and to their flocks. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>St. John <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\" lang=\"EN\">Chrysostom says of the shepherds, \u201c<em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">The angel did not deliver the good news to the Pharisees and Scribes, who were eaten up with pride and envy, but to simple men living in the ancient practices of Moses and the patriarchs.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In their simple lives the shepherds were wiser than any philosophers &#8211; because they understood the truth, firstly about themselves and secondly about God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They depended on God in both the natural and the supernatural worlds.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Another thing we recognize about the shepherds is that the child they worship as the Christ will call himself the Good Shepherd. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>They who guide and protect their flocks are the first to worship Jesus, for whom guiding and protecting his flock is at the very heart of his ministry on earth.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The shepherds of Bethlehem knew how to care for their sheep.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They knew them by their faces, and perhaps by name.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>They remind us that the Good Shepherd does the same for us.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He knows us by name &#8211; and he laid down his life for his sheep. These shepherds of Bethlehem also remind us that this child is known to us as the Lamb of God. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>In 33 years time, he would offer himself as the Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The shepherds came with simple devotion to worship the Christ child.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Perhaps, they saw in him someone who is like one of their lambs that they so carefully watch and guard.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Jesus is more than a lamb.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He is the Incarnate Word, who comes primarily as the Son of Man.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Son of God has become the Son of man. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>He is mortal, but not a sinner; offspring of the old race, and the beginning of the new creation of God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-pagination: none;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cAnd to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God\u2026\u2026.<\/span><\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">And the word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE SHEPHERDS OF BETHLEHEM SERMON PREACHED BY FR.
