Jan 25, 1985- Sep 30, 2003: St. Mark’s, Fitzroy

Vicar Built on existing anglo-catholic tradition, re-establishing Daily Mass and other services. Increased congregation from 25 to 100+, and income from $100,000 to $550,000. Established new initiatives, including lay groups for pastoral care, visiting, study & healing. Prepared adults for confirmation each year. Introduced choir & cantors. Responsible for community centre ministering to the unemployed & street people. Increased paid staff to 8 and volunteers to 50. $350,000 annual budget, with support from the wider community & 50 supporting parishes. AIDS ministry established in 1986. This became the first parish-based ministry in Australia, & a major part of our pastoral work and ministry for 10 years, including an annual AIDS Requiem Mass, which attracted 500 at one time. In 1990 embarked on a 10 year church restoration project. Total cost $1 million. Responsible for government and other grants, as well as chair of fund-raising & building committees. In 1998 obtained the Harrison organ from St Luke’s Church, Cowley, Oxford. This organ was a significant acquisition for Australia, and involved restoration and rebuilding of the organ in St Mark’s. From 1987 responsible for raising $100,000 p.a. from charitable trusts for the Community Centre. In addition, from 1991 raised $168,000 from government & $127,000 from charitable trusts for church restoration.

Nov 24, 1982 – Jan 20, 1985: St Catherine’s, Elizabeth Downs

Priest-in-charge: Centered ministry on building up the parish, which was in danger of being closed down. Established Daily Mass, Benediction, etc & beautified church. The congregation grew in devotion & spirituality, & attendance by 200%. Responsible for facilitating lay people to lead study groups, social activities and pastoral care teams. With team from parish, plans were drawn up for building a rectory, which was completed in 1984

Feb 1, 1980 – Nov 23, 1981: St Martin’s, Campbeltown

Assistant Priest Worked with staff of 3 priests in the largest parish in the diocese. Focus of ministry centered on working with youth. Responsible for establishing a youth group of over 60. With support of the rector and the parish a community centre for unemployed youth was begun. Secured funding with the help of grants and government support.

Feb 1, 1979 – Jan 31, 1980: St Margaret, Woodville,

(Diocese of Adelaide)

Deacon Served the mission district of St Augustine, Woodville Gardens, under the Rector of Woodville. Responsibilities included pastoral care, evangelism & community involvement. Focus was on executing my pastoral duties and being a resident clergyman, particularly since that mission had not had a full-time pastoral presence for over a decade. In my tenure the congregation had a 200% increase in membership and pledging.
